Bob R.

Thank you for your incites. And, unfortunately, in this forum, we will not be able to discuss our differences in depth. Some of your comments actually reinforce my belief that we continue to teach to the least common denominator. but that is because we are afraid that the people of God can not make wise and informed decisions. Even if that is the case, we are called to make those decisions based on Christ's teachings, scripture and our informed conscience. We could debate all of those reasonings, but again, not in this forum. Because of the way the hierarachy teaches is the reason we are where we are. It is certainly the problem of the hierarchy, not human pride as I see it...a reason that we will disagree on some of these issues. And frankly, it is not my secular reasoning...it is my love of scripture and my God given intellect that brings me to some of my conclusions. There are tens of thousands of us that use contraceptives in a loving way that respects our spouses and does not think of them as mere instrument of satisfaction. And yes, there are many others that do use contraception for that purpose. Here again, the hierarchy teaches us that if there can be some "bad", ban it all. Therein lies my issue. The hierarchy is trying to control all, the good and the bad because bad and evil exist together. Won't work and never will work. you can not legislate morality.

I do appreciate your comments, however, I do not believe that you really know where I come from and only take offense at what you perceive as secular reasoning...you couldn't be further from the truth.

Peace.

Respectfully submitted:
WillS's comments are rooted in the kind of secular reasoning the world would have us use. Although we are called to be in the world, we are not called to be of the world.
"Rape, Incest, Life of the Mother" are the often cited rationales for why abortion should be legal. Even the most liberal statistics show those three "difficult cases" account for 3% of all abortions. More realistic estimates suggest they are 1% or less.
Regardless, since WillS uses the expression "Christ-like" in his comments regarding abortion after a rape, I decided to consider "What Would Jesus Do?" I find it hard to believe that if a woman sat with Jesus after she has become pregnant through the horror of a rape, Jesus would suggest she add to that horror by saying, "Kill your child."
Studies have consistently shown that women who choose abortion after a pregnancy stemming from rape or incest suffer more greatly than women who choose life and either keep their child or give their child to a loving and long-waiting couple through adoption. Two wrongs don't make a right.
As for the hierarchy listening to the recommendations of the panel on birth control after the Second Vatican Council. Here is what Pope Paul VI said in his prescient encyclical Humanae Vitae:
"...a man who grows accustomed to the use of contraceptive methods may forget the reverence due to a woman, and, disregarding her physical and emotional equilibrium, reduce her to being a mere instrument for the satisfaction of his own desires, no longer considering her as his partner whom he should surround with care and affection."
This has come to pass. Look at the world around us. Abortion and contraception have not freed women, they have enslaved women. Our modern man knows he can treat women as an object to be used. Contraception means sex without consequence. And if a child is accidentally conceived, kill it.
The Mother of our Lord and Savior, who found herself unexpectedly pregnant, witnesses to us through her submission to God's Will. We are called to honor the child AND the mother of the child (and the father for that matter). We need to love and respect them all.
As for the Church being "doomed to lose these battles and more importantly lose the faithful." God the Son made an important promise to to our first Pope that He would build a Church on that man, Peter, and the gates of the netherworld would not prevail against that Church. If people choose to turn away from the Truth taught by God's Church, that is their choice. In chapter 6 of John, Jesus Himself teaches the Truth and "many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him." He didn't change His teachings, He didn't chase after them. He let them exercise their free will and He let them go.
People have been turning away from Church teachings since the time of Christ Himself. Fundamentally it is due to our inability to humble ourselves as Jesus did and accept our cross. It is not a problem with the hierarchy, it is a problem of human pride.
God's Blessings on you all during your Lenten journey.

Unfortunately, this priest and the rest of the hierarchy have little credibility with the laity. If...if the hierarchy had listed to the recommendations of the commission on the use of birth control at Vatican II, I believe that the people would be standing much closer with the hierarchy on abortion and end of life issues. Other examples, such as the terminally ill woman at the Phoenix hospital, who had an "abortion" (to me, a life saving procedure), any woman that was raped, anything related to incest and others come under the governance of compassionate and Christ-centered auspices, apparently not shared by the hierarchy. There is no black and white on all circumstances and if the hierarchy continues with this idealistic and erroneous position, they will lose not only the laity but the civil legal battles that are before us as a nation right now. When the hierarchy listens only to people like Father Tad Pacholczyk, who splits theological hairs on ectopic pregnancies (it's ok to cut out the fallopian tube where the pregnancy lies, but not open the fallopian tube and remove the "fetus" so that the mother may have a future chance of having a full term baby), we lose sight of what is truly Christ-like. I have an end of life document where I consider having to be fed and hydrated as extra ordinary means, whereas the hierarchy disagrees and wants me to be kept alive for some unknown reason. Basic reasoning gets thrown out the window when you ignore the hearts and souls of the people. And, I am against abortion and euthanasia on a personal level. However, if a woman is raped and becomes pregnant, there can be a more Christ-like attitude towards this situation. Unfortunately, I see the hierarchy always preaching to the lowest level of decision-making with an eye towards the worst case scenario...if we allow something here then it won't stop there but become ever expanding. Guess what? Because abortion is being fought as an all or nothing, the people who are compassionate have to side with the all...and we don't want to, but we have to...it IS the Christ-like thing to do. The hierarchy has to reconvene in a Vatican II type process and get input from all the bishops AND laity on birth control, abortion, aids, homosexuality and more as science and religion are banging heads at an ever increasing pace. People will not wait 500 years to have the church reconcile with the world. I'm not saying that all of the church's positions will change, but without a global commission and discussion, I'm afraid the church is doomed to lose these battles and more importantly lose the faithful.

Alleluia! Finally a father with the courage to stand up against the evil enemy of the church! Well done. Makes me proud to be a catholic. If only other priest and deacons in the Catholic Church could be just as courageous and fight for the lives of our innocent children. God bless you!

Life is all about life. Life is not about the culture of death. I have a say because I have life; and I say - stop Planned Parenthood and all they stand for, and all those in power who fund evil. Stop embrionic stem cell research, stop abortions, stop the murders, stop child endangerment, stop pornography, stop human trafficing; stop those who seek to exploit people; stop contraceptives; stop euthanasia. Stop trying to kill us. The Catholic Church is all about life & love. There is nothing more to do than to turn around those who oppose these things. Love thy neighbor as you love yourselves. Get with God. Live for life; live for love; live for God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Thank you, father. You are so right.
